A Guide to the “American Riviera”

Santa Barbara’s history dates back thousands of years to when the Chumash people first inhabited the region. The Chumash thrived in this area, taking advantage of the rich resources provided by the coastal and inland environments. They were skilled fishermen, hunters, and craftsmen, known for their sophisticated basket weaving and plank-built canoes called tomols.

The Spanish period began in 1782 with the establishment of El Presidio Real de Santa Bárbara, a military outpost intended to defend the territory against foreign invaders and to support the nearby missions. Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786 by the Spanish Franciscans, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. Known as the “Queen of the Missions,” it was the tenth of 21 missions established in California. The Mission, with its twin bell towers and lush gardens, remains an active parish and a symbol of the city’s Spanish colonial heritage.

El Camino Real

El Camino Real, or “The Royal Road,” connected the string of missions, presidios, and pueblos throughout California. This historic route was vital for travel and communication during the Spanish and Mexican periods. Today, markers in the form of mission bells can be seen along modern highways, commemorating the historic path that linked the early settlements.
